Biography

David Callender was educated at Eton College, and Trinity College, Oxford. He became a rowing Blue in 1950 and 1951, but was a coxless pairs specialist, and his regular partner was Chris Davidge. The pair regularly competed in the Silver Goblets at Henley and the two men reached the semi-final in 1951, when beaten by the Cambridge duo of James Crowden and Brian Lloyd. The following year Callender and Davidge went to the Helsinki Olympics and finished fourth.

Just weeks before the 1955 Henley Regatta, Callender pulled out with a strained back and his seat in the Silver Goblets was taken by the Australian James Gobbo, who reached the final with Davidge, only to lose to the defending champions, Igor Buldakov and Viktor Ivanov of the Soviet Union. After Oxford, Callender served in the Royal Navy. In 1959 he married Janet Mackintosh, secretary to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
