Biography

East German rower Jochen Neuling placed an unfortunate fourth with Heinz Weigel in Roma at the Olympic Games. Both rowed for SC DHfK Leipzig and participated for the mixed German team. Neuling won five East German national titles, before defecting in 1962 to West Germany. He then signed a declaration that he had received payments for his victories, and had also used performance enhancing drugs. This declaration was sent to IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch by German NOC President Willi Daume but with no known response.
