Biography

German rower Stefani Werremeier partnered Inge Althoff-Schwerzmann in the coxed pairs at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and captured the silver medal just 0.14 seconds ahead of the bronze medallists. Werremeier and Inge Althoff-Schwerzmann were also the 1990 world champions, 1991 runners-up, and 1989 bronze medalists. Both were awarded Germany’s highest sports award, the Silver Bay Leaf, for the 1992 Olympic silver medal.

The pair were also German champions from 1989-92. Werremeier then partnered Kathrin Haacker after Althoff married Swiss rower Beat Schwerzmann and then represented Switzerland. With Haacker, Werremeier finished an unfortunate fourth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but won the German national title that year. In 1994, Werremeier won the eights gold medal at the World Championships. She studied medicine and became a doctor with her own practice at Lostau in Sachsen-Anhalt.
