German rower Ansgar Wessling won two Olympic medals with the eights. The first was a gold medal at Seoul in 1988 representing West Germany, and at Barcelona four years later he won bronze, representing re-unified Germany. Wessling earned his first merits at the 1984 World Championships winning the lightweight coxless fours silver medal. In 1989, he won the gold medal with the eights, and the following year he again won silver with the coxed fours. In 1991 he won his second eights world title, and in 1992 added the bronze medal.
In 1993, Wessling was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Domestically, he won German titles in the lightweight coxless pairs in 1983, and normal coxless pairs in 1985.
Between 2003-08 Wessling turned to motorsport racing, competing in the Porsche Sports Cup until he had a severe accident on the Hockenheimring, which he narrowly survived. He later built up 12 hearing aid shops in Essen.
