Jószef Sátori rowed for Hungary at the 1948, 1952, and 1960 Olympics. During World War II, Sátori, his parents, and his brother, Sándor, were known for their kindness to many Jewish families. When the Germans occupied Hungary in 1944 and began deporting Jews to Auschwitz, the Sátori family helped several Jewish families by hiding them in the cellar of their grocery store. They built secret bunkers and provided them with food from the store. Unfortunately, someone found out and complained to the Germans and brought Jószef in for questioning. He never revealed anything and the Jewish families were not found. However, realizing it was too dangerous to continue hiding them underneath their grocery, the Sátoris smuggled them to a cave in a nearby forest, where they continued to provide them with food and supplies until Hungary was liberated in 1945.
