Biography

Mary Mazzio attended Mount Holyoke College, graduating with a degree in philosophy and political science. In addition to competing in double sculls at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Mazzio rowed in quad sculls at the 1991 World Championships. Mazzio later attended Georgetown Law School and then worked as a partner with Brown, Rudnick, Freed, and Gesmer in Boston.

Mazzio also studied film production in graduate school at Boston University and that became her main career, as she became an award-winning documentary filmmaker. She first became known for “A Hero for Daisy” in 1999, which was a film about Olympic rower Chris Ernst, who led her Yale rowing team in a protest to obtain better athletic opportunities for women. Other films she became known for included “Apple Pie” in 2002, “Lemonade Stories” in 2004, “TEN9EIGHT” in 2009, and the “Apple Pushers” in 2011. For her filmmaking, Mazzio received numerous awards, including the Gracie Award for “A Hero for Daisy”, the Women’s Sports Foundation Journalism Award, the Myra Sadker award, a Henry Luce Foundation Fellowship in Korea, and a Rotary Foundation Graduate Fellowship in France. She also received first place for best documentary at the Rhode Island Film Festival.
