Biography

Secondo De Marchi was an Italian boxer in the 1930s. He was chosen to go to the 1936 Berlin Olympics despite never having won an Italian title, and was not considered in the same class as other Italian heavyweights such as Nino Paoletti, Italian champion in 1936 in Roma, and the truck driver Angelo Saruggia. At the Olympics, De Marchi was beaten in his opening bout by Britain’s Anthony Stuart.

De Marchi never turned pro and later moved to Rotterdam in the Netherlands where, during World War II, he hid many compatriots in the attic of his boxing school, avoiding their capture by German troops.
