Biography

Mike Papps’ father owned a firearms business, and thus Mike took up sport shooting before he was 10 years of age. As an adult, he came to focus on the pistol as his specialty and first attempted to make the Olympic team in 1956, but was unable to do so. He was more successful in 1960 and 1964, however, where he placed 31st and 19th respectively in the rapid-fire pistol, 25 metres event. He also competed at three editions of the World Championships in 1962, 1966, and 1970 and won a silver medal at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, behind Tony Clark of Great Britain. Papps was a 15-time Australian national champion between 1956 and 1977. By career, he took over his father’s business the same year as the Rome Games, and his younger brother Peter competed in pistol shooting at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
