Canadian Roy Cole’s talents stretched across the realms of business, art collection, community service, and marksmanship. It was the latter skill that helped him represent his native country at the 1952 Summer Olympics, where he placed 13th in a field of 40 competitors in the Trap event, a competition won by fellow Canadian George Genereux. Prior to his Olympic appearance he had captured numerous national and international tournaments, but this was only part of his many accomplishments. Starting as the youngest warden of the Wentworth, Ontario County Council he built a career in public service that served as an excellent complement to his business role as President of Cole Lumber. Included among his philanthropic contributions was a $60,000 donation to the Hamilton Art Gallery and the distribution of many of the pieces from his private collection to the McMaster University Art Gallery and the Royal Ontario Museum, among others. In 1991 he was inducted into the city of Hamilton’s Gallery of Distinction.
