Tony Chivers

Sport shooter Tony Chivers attended Gresham’s boarding school in Norfolk before going to Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he became a four-time shooting Blue between 1958-61. Although he won his Blue at rifle shooting, Chivers did win the 1958 timed and rapid-fire competition at the national .22 pistol shooting championship at Bisley. In third place was the 1946 King’s Prize winner Charles Willott.

Chivers later became known internationally as a pistol shooter and, during the elimination shoot for the 1962 Cairo World Championships, he broke the British 50 metres free pistol record by 14 points. In 1964 Chivers finished fifth in the 50 metres free pistol event at the Tokyo Olympics, just three points off a medal. Two years later he competed in both the World Championship at Weisbaden and the British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Kingston, Jamaica, where he again narrowly missed a medal, after finishing fourth behind gold medal winner and fellow Englishman Charles Sexton. By profession, Chivers was a London investment analyist.
