Biography

Charles Mackie joined the Royal Navy in 1901 and eventually became a chief petty officer. He served on many different ships during his 24-years-service, including five postings to HMS Excellent. He retired in 1925 and his final two years were spent aboard the Excellent when she was docked in Portsmouth as a Navy training ship.

Mackie was an excellent revolver shot, appearing at Bisley on many occasions, and in 1924 he won the Northland Revolver gold medal the month after representing Great Britain in the rapid-fire pistol (25 metres) event at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Mackie’s brother George lost his life in the HMS Titanic disaster in 1912.
