East German sports shooter Kurt Czekalla won the bronze medal in trap shooting at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In 1967 he came in second at the East German nationals, and in 1969 and 1970 he won that title. He took up sports shooting late at the age of 29 years. By profession, Czekalla was a trained motorcar mechanic.
