Most of the shooters used the over-and-under Browning shotgun. Britain’s Bob Braithwaite, a veterinarian, missed two of his first 13 shots, finishing with only a 23 on his first string, but then was clean on his last seven strings for 198 and the gold medal. The next places ended up in a tie at 196 among Tom Garrigus (USA), Kurt Czekalla (GDR), and the defending silver medalist, Pāvels Seničevs of the Soviet Union. Seničevs went out in the first string with only 22, and dropped from the medals, while Garrigus and Czekalla were clean. In the second string, Czekalla missed his first bird and 12th bird, both on his second barrel, while Garrigus was clean for the silver medal.
