There was one new event added to the program for 1968, skeet shooting. Skeet had been popular world-wide for many years and had been conducted at the UIT World Championships since the 1950s. Shot at clay discs, the event had some similarities to trap shooting, but with differences in terms of the angles the clays are thrown from, the position the rifle is held, and the amount and number of doubles shot. Like trap shooting, it is shot with a shotgun. The other six events in 1968 were the same as in 1960-64 – two pistol events, three rifle events, and trap shooting. All the shooting events were held at the Vincente Suárez Shooting Range.
The other big change in 1968 Olympic shooting was that women were allowed to compete for the first time, shooting alongside the men. Three women competed – Eulalia Rolińska (POL) in prone small-bore rifle, finishing 22nd, Gladys de Seminario (PER) in prone small-bore rifle, finishing 31st; and Nuria Ortíz (MEX) in skeet shooting, placing 13th.
