Biography

Rapid-fire pistol sports shooter Jürgen Wiefel won the silver medal in the 25 metres event at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, just behind his teammate Norbert Klaar. Four years later at Moskva, Wiefel lost the shoot-off against Romanian Corneliu Ion and again won the silver medal. He won the East German national title in 1975, 1978-79 and 1982-83.

Wiefel became a prominent supporter of the founding of the Saxony Sports Shooting Federation after re-unification, and became chief executive from 1991-94. He then moved to Baden where he also became chief executive of the Regional Sports Shooting Federation from 1994-96. From 1999-2000 he was then chief coach of the Regional Federation of Thuringia, before moving to the German Sports Shooting Federation, where he held several coaching positions.
