Biography

János Dosztály started competing in shooting in the 1930s when he was a high school student. Later, Dosztály continued in the Levente movement. Unfortunately, World War II also interrupted his sports career. In 1947 when he returned home from captivity, he was interested in shooting again, so he quickly sought connections with that. First, he competed for the Freedom Fighters’ Association, then for the Zalka Máté LK. In 1953 he transferred to Bp. Dózsa, where he competed until the end of his career.

Between 1951 and 1963 Dosztály won 21 individual and 31 team championship titles in various rifle events. As a member of the Hungarian national team, he represented his country at the 1952 Helsinki and 1960 Roma Olympics. At the 1958 World Championships in Moskva, he won a silver medal in the small-bore rifle team competition and a bronze medal in the large-bore rifle team competition. He was a member of the Hungarian small-bore rifle team that won a gold medal with a world record at the European Championships in Milano the following year.

After his career, Dosztály was also a member of the presidency of the Budapest Shooting Association for many years, until his death. He did not do any coaching work, but he was an outstanding, highly respected international referee. During and after his sports career, he worked at the Hungarian National Bank.
