Earl Herring graduated from Gettysburg High School in Pennsylvania and then joined the Air Force. He had a career in the military, serving as a SM/Sergeant in 1968, and finishing his 20 in 1987. He eventually retired after 26 years of service, including tours in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, with a rank of chief master sergeant. For many years he was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.
