Daniel McMahon was the son of Daniel McMahon, who was a well-known leader of Tammany Hall and a very wealthy man. When the elder McMahon died, the younger inherited well over a million dollars, huge for that era. But his profligate lifestyle soon dissipated the fortune. Although he worked titularly as a lawyer, McMahon had lost almost all his money when he died at Bellevue Hospital. The cause of death was listed as acute alcoholism and bromide intoxication.
