Biography
Finnish competitive swimmer Esa Lepola had barely turned 16 when he swam in the 1,500 metres freestyle at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The youngest Olympian to represent Finland at the time, Lepola finished seventh in his heat and 27th overall. One year after the Olympics he won silver in the same race at the Nordic Championships. At the 1966 European Championships he swam in both the 400 metres freestyle and the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay, finishing eighth in the latter.
From 1965 to 1968 Lepola represented the Helsinki Workers’ Swimmers Association, winning 12 Finnish championships and breaking eight national records. Away from swimming he trained as a lawyer and later worked for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
