Swimmer Hans-Joachim Reich from East Berlin was a member of the mixed German 4x200 freestyle relay, finishing fifth at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He also competed in the 1,500 freestyle, but failed to reach the final. In 1952-53 and 1955 he won the East German 100 freestyle title. Reich won a further six national freestyle titles, at 200 metres in 1953, 400 metres in 1954-55 and 1,500 metres between 1954-56.
