Biography

West German Barbara Schwarzfeldt competed in the 800 m freestyle at the 1972 München Olympics, but was eliminated in the heats. However, in 1974, she won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Vienna in the 200 m butterfly. She was subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Schwarzfeldt won five national titles: 200 m freestyle in 1974, 400 m freestyle 1976, 200 m butterfly 1974-75, and 400 m individual medley in 1976.
