Biography

Massimo Nistri was an Italian backstroke swimmer in the early 1970s who specialized in the longer distance, 200 metres. He was a three-time Italian Champion (1972-74), twice a runner-up and third-place finisher.

Internationally Nistri was a member of the national team from 1970-75, competing at two European Championships (1970, 1974), and in numerous meets with other nations, the last of which was in May 1975 in the Latin Cup in Las Palmas, Spain.

Nistri’s highlights were the gold medal at the 1971 Mediterranean Games with 2:12.6 ahead of the Spaniard Santiago Esteva and teammate Mauro Calligaris, and the seventh place in the final (2:10.11) at the 1973 Beograd World Championships in the event won by Roland Matthes in world record time.
