Biography

Kazue Kojima started swimming in the nearby Kinokawa River. Her sixth place in the 400 m freestyle of the 1936 Olympics was the highest ranking for a Japanese female freestyle swimmer until the 2004 Olympics in Athena. Domestically, she won one Japanese Championship in the 100 m freestyle (1932) and three consecutively in the 200 m (1932-34). She was also a close friend of 1936 gold medalist Hideko Maehata who was also born in Hashimoto. A statue of Kazue Kojima was erected at her old high school in Nagoya.
