Biography

Prior to his silver medal at Los Angeles in 1932, Toshio Irie finished fourth in the 1928 100 metre backstroke. He had also set a world record in the 200 metre backstroke in 1928. In the same year he earned both backstroke titles at the national championships (100 and 200 m). In 1930, he took another silver in the 100 m backstroke at the Far Eastern Games, behind his compatriot Kenkichi Katayama. Irie graduated from the Waseda University School of Science and Engineering and later joined the Eagle Clamp Co., which manufactures and sells transportation slings. He later served as its director.
