Dutch competitive swimmer Truus Kerkmeester represented the Onderlinge Dames-Zwemclub in Rotterdam where she specialised in the backstroke. After impressive performances at the national championships Kerkmeester was selected to swim at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, reaching the semi-finals of the 100 metres backstroke. In the months after the Olympics she broke world records in both the 200 and 400 metres backstroke before compatriot Rie Mastenbroek bettered them. Kerkmeester also finished third in the 100 metres backstroke at the Dutch national championships in 1939 and 1940.
