Biography

German football coach Karl-Heinz Marotzke started his career managing domestic clubs before moving to Africa to coach Ghana and Nigeria. Marotzke was a qualified sports teacher who lectured at the University of Cologne. In Germany he was the manager of SF Hamborn 07 (1963–64), VfL Osnabrück (1964–66), and FC Schalke 04 (1967). His appointment at Schalke was a surprise due to his relevant lack of experience, with him leaving the club after 13 matches, which included just one win.

In 1968 Marotzke became the first German to be appointed as the coach of the Ghanian national team. Ghana competed at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, drawing two of their three matches, and losing the third. After his spell ended with Ghana in 1970 Marotzke then became the manager of Nigeria, staying with the team until 1974. After a lengthy break from managing teams, Marotzke was in his late 60s when he returned to Africa to coach Botswana in 2001.
