Biography

Despite hailing from a family of tailors, Reg Mountford was a coal miner when he started playing football as an amateur in the Third Division (North) of the English League with his home-town team Darlington. A full-back, he made his début in December 1928 and after just 14 appearances turned professional with Huddersfield Town in the 1929 close-season. He spent 10 years with the Yorkshire club, making over 250 appearances, one of them being the 1938 FA Cup final defeat by Preston North End. It was the first televised Cup Final and Preston reversed an extra-time defeat by Huddersfield six years earlier, by winning with a penalty in the last minute of extra-time, scored by George Mutch, with a kick that famously went into the net off the cross bar. During World War II, Mountford played one War-time international for England, in a 3-2 defeat by Scotland at Newcastle in 1941. He retired from playing during the War and went to live in Denmark, where he started coaching in the København area. He was also coach to the Denmark national side that won the bronze medal at the 1948 Olympics, beating Great Britain in the third place match. He returned to Britain, and in 1952 was appointed coach at Bristol City, a position he held for just one season.
