Bernd Zobel began his career as a skiing coach in the region of Carinthia, Austria in 1987. In the 1990s Zobel had progressed to a Europa Cup coach before becoming a World Cup coach. During his coaching career he worked with several future stars of Austrian skiing including Stephan Eberharter, Christian Mayer, Renate Götschl, Michaela Dorfmeister, and Alexandra Meissnitzer.
Zobel also had a long association with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), becoming a FIS Alpine technical director in 1993. At the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer and Nagano he was a course setter for the giant slalom and combined events, respectively. He imparted his knowledge outside of Austria too, coaching in Canada, Iran, Czechia, and Slovenia.
