Gunnar Ekstrand initially worked as a sales assistant before he was trained as a physiotherapist at the Göteborgs Gymnastiska Institut. In 1919, he opened his own practice and became a swimming teacher in Göteborg in 1924.
Ekstrand competed at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm in plain high diving and, eight years later, in 1920 at the Antwerpen Olympics in platform and springboard diving. His greatest success was finishing fifth in springboard diving in 1920; he did not reach the final in the two other events.
At home, Ekstrand was the Swedish champion in diving in 1916-17 and 1921-22. From 1911-31, he was a member of the board of his club Simklubben S02. Beginning in 1933, Ekstrand was secretary of Göteborg’s Swimming Club, and in 1935, he earned the Golden Swimming Badge.
Ekstrand was married to Signe Jakobsson, and together they had two sons.
