Biography

Wayne Devlin had an incredible amateur boxing career in Australia during the 1970s. From 1970 to 1977 Devlin won eight consecutive Australian championships, three as a welterweight and five as a light-middleweight, with the feat earning him a place in the Guinness Book of Records. During this time he also won the Arthur Tunstall Trophy, awarded to the best boxer at the national championships, on four occasions (1972, 1974–76). In 1972 he boxed in the welterweight tournament at the München Olympics, defeating Mirgaani Gomaa Rizgalla (SUD), before losing to Sergio Lozano (MEX). After missing the 1974 Commonwealth Games due to illness, Devlin returned to the Olympics in 1976, this time competing in the light-middleweight class in Montréal.
