Biography

Cathy Carr, an 18-year-old from Highland High School in Albuquerque, won the 1972 AAU 100 m breaststroke and then took the Olympic title by defeating the veteran 1964 champion, Galina Stepanova-Prozumenshchikova of the USSR. Carr set a world record of 1:13.58 to better Catie Ball’s four-year-old world best of 1:14.2 and earned a share of a second world record as a member of the winning medley relay team. Carr trained for the Olympics at the Coronado Swim Club under former men’s gold medalist, Mike Troy.
