Biography

At the 1968 Olympics three swimmers – Galina Prozumenshchikova of the USSR, Đurđica Bjedov of Yugoslavia, and Sharon Wichman – shared all six medals in the two breaststroke events. Wichman’s gold medal in the 200 breaststroke was the first ever by an American woman, and would not be matched until 2004. Wichman, who competed for the Club Olympia in Fort Wayne, also won two AAU breaststroke titles in the indoor short-course championships, winning the 200 yards in 1968 and the 100 yards in 1969. She later married and settled in Indiana. Wichman was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1991.
