Bill Darnton was born in Flint, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan. He also swam for the Detroit Athletic Club. He captained the Wolverine swim team in 1962. A distance specialist, Darnton was second in 1960 at the NCAA Meet in the 1,500 metre freestyle, and placed fourth in the 1960 AAU indoor 1,500.
