Biography

At the time he won his Olympic medal, Doug Northway was a high school student in Tucson, Arizona. He improved rapidly dropping his 1,500 time by 45 seconds between the 1971 AAU and the 1972 Olympic Trials. Although he never won an AAU title, Northway won the 400m freestyle at the 1975 Pan-American Games.

Northway later became a pastor and a swim coach, eventually settling in Tucson and coaching at the Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club. In 1997 he pleaded guilty to attempted molestation of a 9-year-old girl and was sentenced to four months in prison, four months of house arrest, and lifetime probation.
