Biography

After winning the 1936 U.S. Olympic platform trials, Elbert Root took the silver medal at the Berlin Games, finishing second to Marshall Wayne, who had only placed third at the tryouts. Root, who competed for the Detroit AC, won the AAU highboard in 1937 and 1938. He turned professional and toured with Billy Rose’s Aquacades before seeing service with the Marine Corps in World War II.
