Paul Samson competed in both swimming and water polo at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Samson swam in the heats of the 4x200 freestyle relay. Samson swam for the Illinois Athletic Club. He attended the University of Michigan, also earning a medical degree at the school. He was the 1927 NCAA Champion in both the 220 yard and 440 yard freestyles.
Samson later became a thoracic surgeon. In World War II he served in the 2nd Auxiliary Surgical Group in the European theatre. While there he performed what may have been the first pneumonectomy using a newly described ligation technique.
