Biography

Deitre Collins played volleyball in college at the University of Hawai’i, where she was a two-time Broderick Award winner as national player of the year (1983-84). She was on the US National team from 1986-92, playing at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and was named an alternate to the 1992 Olympic team. Collins won bronze medals at the 1986 Goodwill Games and the 1987 Pan American Games. She earned over 130 international caps. Collins played professionally in Italy (1988-89) and France (1989-91), helping win two French League Championships and the 1990 European Champions Cup.

After her playing days ended, Collins entered coaching. She started as an assistant at South Alabama, Northern Arizona and Houston, before becoming head coach at UNLV in 1996. Collins was in Las Vegas for eight years, before being named head coach at Cornell in 2004. In 2009 Collins became head coach at San Diego State University. She was also head coach of the US junior team in 1998, 2000, and 2001. Collins was named to the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team in 2005, and is a member of the AVCA Hall of Fame.
