Biography

Manfred Herzog played water polo and was named to the East German national team, which finished sixth at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The team was coached by Rolf Bastel. Nationally Herzog played with SG Dynamo Magdeburg, at that time the top club in the GDR. In the GDR Herzog was honored as a Master of Sports. After his athletic career he became a swimming instructor.

In 1968 the DTSB (East German Gymnastics and Sports Association) ended national support for water polo, field hockey, basketball, and some other sports. International competitions in the capitalist world were forbidden, training sessions were cancelled, and water polo was no longer allowed in Magdeburg.
