Erich Pennekamp earned 45 caps as a water polo player. He took part in the 1954 European Championships at Torino and the 1956 Olympic Games at Melbourne, where his teams finished sixth in both tournaments. Domestically he won the 1952 German Championships with Duisburger SV and a 1957 title with ASC Duisburg, both together with his twin brother Rudi. In 1955 he placed second in the German Championships with 1. FC Nürnberg. He died from cancer in Essen at the age of 83.
