Biography

Robert Horn played water polo at Fullerton Junior College and then Long Beach State, and is often considered the greatest goalie in US water polo history. He also played club water polo for the Lynwood Swim Club, the Southern California Water Polo Club, and the US Navy Aviation Station at Los Alamitos. Horn played on six AAU champions. Horn led his Long Beach State team to Pacific Coast Conference titles in 1957-58. In addition to his two Olympic appearances he won a silver medal at the 1955 Pan American Games. He won AAU All-American honors in 1950-56.

Horn later became a renowned coach, starting at Long Beach State in 1959 but mainly for UCLA, moving there in 1965. He led UCLA to PAC-8 titles from 1964-71 and won NCAA titles in 1969 and 1971-72. He coached both swimming and water polo at UCLA until 1973 when he stepped down as swim coach to focus on water polo, finally retiring from coaching in 1990. He was the US assistant coach at the 1967 Pan American Games and the 1968 Olympics. Horn also coached club water polo, leading Inland NuPike to the AAU outdoor title in 1963 and 1968. He was NCAA Coach of the Year in 1973 and was elected to the US Water Polo Hall of Fame in 1977.
