Biography

After starting out at Mt. San Antonio College, Joe Vargas played college water polo at UCLA, where he was an All-American in 1975 and 1976. Vargas was on the US national team from 1975-84. He won two gold medals at the 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games, played at the 1979 and 1982 World Championships, winning silver in 1982, and made the Olympic team in 1980 and 1984. Vargas was an AAU All-American in 1975-77 and a US Water Polo All-American in 1978-81 and 1986. In 1979 he was named Southern California Amateur Athlete of the Year. Vargas later became a commercial real estate broker with Cushman & Wakefield.
