Jack Austin from Leytonstone qualified for the 1924 Paris Olympics after finishing second to Derby’s Fred Attenborough in the Olympic trial at the Stadium Club, Holborn. The Derby man set two British records on his way to qualifying. Austin finished third behind winner Attenborough again, and Fred Lowes in the middleweight competition at the 1925 British Championships. Austin set some British records of his own, including the 12-stone two-handed clean and jerk in 1925.
