Born in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in 1938 George Manners emigrated to Great Britain in 1957. While his first love was cricket, Manners found the English weather too cold, so he switched to an indoor sport and took up weightlifting. Representing England, he competed at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff where he finished fifth. Four years later he won silver in the light-heavyweight category at the 1962 Games in Perth. In 1964 Manners won his weight category at the British Championships, earning himself a place at the Tokyo Olympics where he finished 15th in the light-heavyweight. He continued to have success at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, winning silver in 1966 in Kingston in the middle-heavyweight, and bronze in 1970 in Edinburgh, also as a middle-heavyweight but this time representing St. Vincent. Manners later worked as a coach and a referee in the sport.
