Biography

The early weightlifting career of Percy Mills had to be put on hold while he served in the Yorkshire regiment after joining up in 1915. He saw brief service in France before demobilisation. Selection for the lightweight class at the 1924 Antwerpen Olympics probably came about as a result of winning an event at Camberwell Palace a few months before the Games. He was just one of two British lifters at the Games, along with featherweight John Paine. Unfortunately, neither of them fared very well, and they finished way down the final placings. By occupation, Mills was a machine driller.
