Biography

Lightweight lifter Gunter Ambraß won two bronze medals at both the 1978 World Championships and 1979 Europeans, before a silver medal at the 1980 Europeans. He participated in two Olympic Games, 1976 at Montréal and 1980 at Moskva, and just missed the podiums as fourth and fifth, respectively. In 1978 and 1979, Ambraß won the East German national titles.

After German re-unification, former East German officials admitted to administering doping to nearly all Olympic athletes, including weightlifter Ambraß. He had several positive doping analyses’ during his career, and former GDR officials always found excuses, or lies, for them.
