Biography

Janetta Vance was one of 10 children fathered by Dublin Justice of the Peace (JP), Thomas Vance. When she was a teenager, Janetta moved to London to complete her education at Catherine House in Chelsea.

As an archer, Vance was a member of the Hove Toxophilite Society. Although most of her triumphs came at her home club, she did occasionally compete in the Grand National Meeting for the national championships, and at the Yorkshire County Cricket round in 1907 she won the prize for the most golds at 50 yards.

Vance and her sisters Kathleen and Georgina were also good standard tennis players and all three siblings were excellent croquet players. In 1875 Georgina won the All-Ireland Croquet Championship, and the following year Janetta carried off the title.
