Biography

Juan Ramón Báez played basketball for Puerto Rico at the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games. Báez studied at the University of Puerto Rico High School and then moved to Madrid where he played from 1958-60 on the capital’s team. He twice led the Spanish League in scoring. In Puerto Rico, Báez played 17 seasons in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN), always with Cardenales de Río Piedras. He was the second player in BSN history to score 5,000 points and at his retirement had the BSN record of 5,239 points scored.

In addition to his Olympic appearances, Báez won two medals at the Pan American Games, with silver in 1959 and bronze in 1963, and won two gold medals at the 1962 and 1966 Central American and Caribbean Games.
