Biography

Enrique Baliño’s lengthy domestic career lasted between 1944 and 1962. During that time, he played on three South American basketball championship-winning teams, helping Uruguay take gold in 1947, 1949, and 1953, and was also with the squad when they earned a bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics. Uruguay won two of its three matches in round one, losing only to the powerful American team, and then advanced further after losing to France, but defeating Bulgaria and Argentina, in round two. Uruguay then lost against the Soviet Union, the upcoming silver medal team, but defeated Argentina a second time to take third place overall in the tournament. Baliño appeared in all eight matches. He continued to compete internationally through 1958. His son, also named Enrique Baliño, later became a prominent international business manager and motivational speaker.
