Biography

William “Bill” Bell was a member of the 1947-1948 University of British Columbia (UBC) Men’s Basketball Team that won the pre-Olympic tournament in Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto for the right to represent Canada at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, where they finished ninth (winning the consolation bracket). The Canadian Olympic squad from UBC was complimented by players from the Montreal team, whom they had met in the Olympic Trial finals.

Bell graduated from the first-ever medical class at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. After his graduation in 1954, he moved to Victoria, British Columbia, with his wife Lois (whom he was married to for 62 years), raised their five children, and was a successful physician.

Bell and his 1947-1948 UBC Thunderbird teammates were inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame Class of 1996.
