Biography

Hans “Sidney” Bergmann, a member of the Hakoah club in Wien (Vienna), was one of the top Austrian lightweight wrestlers of the 1920s. The winner of multiple national championship titles, Bergmann was selected to compete for Austria at the 1924 Paris Olympics where he lost to Josef Beránek of Czechoslovakia in his only match. Bergmann continued to remain active in the wrestling scene until the late 1930s, when he emigrated to Israel. He joined the Maccabi Tel Aviv club there by 1939, and continued to compete and coach until the 1940s.
